Split Croatia

Welcome back.! I hope you enjoyed my last post of our travels to Brac Island.  If you did not yet read this post scroll down below this one.

The Next leg of our journey to Croatia brought us by ferry to the city of Split. Split is also one of the oldest Cities in the area considered just over 1700 years old.

 Our apartment was in the center of the Diocletian's Palace as seen in the photo above.  Diocletian's Palace was the retirement home of Roman Emperor Diocletian. In AD 293 the palace started construction for 10 years it was built from the limestone from Brac Island. As I referenced in my last post. This massive Structure was built like a Roman Military Fortress. It faces the sea with its walls 700 feet long and 70 feet high enclosing 9.5 acres.

Today the palace is the inner core of the city, shops, markets, no car trafiic , and in the center of the palace the Ancient Cathedral of St Duje and the Bell Tower. After a long climb to the top the view was breathtaking. The bell tower stands 75 feet tall 9 feet thick walls, surrounded by 28 granite and marble columns.

Just outside the Palace walls stands the Statue of Grgur Ninski. He was a 10th century Bishop. It is said that rubbing the statues toe is to bring good luck.

As Tammy and I sat having some lunch I couldn't resist to put on my zoom lens and sneak some shots of this wedding under the Bell Tower, all while sitting at our table not bad.

2 girls 4 cameras and a 7000km journey through Croatia

After 2 days, 3 airports, a bus and a ferry Tammy and I made our way to Brac Island Croatia. The Island Of Brac is the largest of the central Dalmatian Group in the Adriatic Sea. The island is dominated by limestone. This stone has been used for centuries to build the cities all over Dalmatia, and  the White house in Washington. All over the island there are thousands of piles of rock hand stacked by the women centuries ago to clear the land for farming.
After a wet ride from Split to Brac. We arrive in Supetar the largest settlement on Brac, pop 3400. They tell us that today was the first day it has rained in 50 days, what luck we have.

 

The Parish Church of St Peter (from which the town derives its name) stands on the side of an old chapel which was restored in 1773 in a Baroque architectural Style. Amongst the old stone buildings and narrow stone streets are olive groves, which is a major agricultural importance in this area.

After a 35km scooter ride to the south side of the island on a hwy that at times felt like we were filming an episode of dangerous road truckers, we ended up in Bol. Bol is know for its most popular beach Zlatni Rat. This beach is a peninsula of pebble rock( no sand castle making in croatia), this beach visibly moves with the tidal movement. On a still day the stones on the sea floor that are more then 30 feet away seem only an arms length away. The water was cold but felt amazing.

After a great day on the scooter some laughs and some rather interesting sites( ie the nudist beach) just some things you shouldnt see LOL we ended our day looking out over Supetar.

A day with Penny and Dee

The sky was perfect and the field looked amazing and through my eyes I had the perfect spot for a photoshoot with Penny and Dee. Well after we got Penny all shined up and Dee in her riding clothes I suggested my location. Dee laughed and said are you crazy you want me to put Penny ( a horse that LOVES to eat) in the field during hay season.  It sounded like a good idea.  Denise sure earned that cold drink we had when we were finished,trying to keep Penny from eating everything in site was a challenge. Shaking treats over my head to get her to look at me worked well tooLOL

Street Graffiti

After a fun day of exploring this abandoned building in Wasaga Beach, I got some great shots of the girls. I think Im going to come back sometime and shoot some wedding shots here. The graffiti is so colourful.
